We got our first egg!

Hi Quaillady!
Thanks!

We got another tonight, and it was sitting in the same spot as the first. Same hen? If so, the other 4 are slacking and better get busy.

Sometimes you can tell if it's the same hen by the egg markings. The patterns are similar. This helps them identify their own eggs vs other hens eggs. They are smart creatures.

Wow! that's neat to know!

I'll get my glasses and take a closer look.

The others are still slacking! LOL! There's 5 hens in the cage.

More eggs please.

I'm trying to talk my meal worms into growing faster! All I have are very little ones at the moment. I need to get to the feed store this week and get some more to refresh the colony.

Piggy geckos ate them all.

I hope your bribe worked.

Ours are in the house, and have plenty of light, but are just 8 wks old. So i'm not surprised it's a slow start combined with the time of year.

It seems like just yesterday that we got them, so the eggs are pretty exciting no matter what.

I'm working on the aviary to get them moved out soon. Which I know will disrupt their cycle, but that's O.K.
It's a walk in , large aviary, so I'll spoil them over the winter.

Aren't you just one big ray of...

well, sunshine is not coming to mind this morning.

I do use a good GBS.. And meal worms , seed, greens, veggies, sprouts, and a great corn bread they all love! I feel in the wild they get a well rounded diet, and should provide the same! My birds get treats each day. I just don't believe a packaged diet has it all.

All my birds for that matter. (parakeets and such)

Everyone is intitled to their opinion, but it seems it could be put in nicer ways. There are young people on this site.

Ok, sorry if I offended anyone!

Meal worms for geckos GOOD!
Meal worms for coturnix, counter productive, to very bad. Since we are all allowed our own opinion, then this is mine.
First off, everyone can feed their birds what ever they want. No matter what I say.
It is my opinion that feeding meal worms to coturnix of any age can lead to unwanted aggression. Especially in chicks, but also in fully grown birds. They are also way high in fat, and it can lead to people into thinking that they can feed poor quality (Low protein) feed, and just throw them some meal worms to boost the protein and everything will be alright. (That later is my main objection).

Secondly, it is my opinion that greens are good for coturnix. Stay away from iceberg lettuce because (it is pure evil), but kale, spinach, mustard, and any greens in that family will be very good!

Thirdly, seeds are unnecessary for coturnix and only water down the high protein GBS with way to little protein as well as adding fat that is unneeded. The same with meal worms.

I have no idea what a parakeet needs, but a coturnix fed only GBS and tap water will preform equally as well, if not better than one raised on basement feed. Adding high calcium greens and something like oyster shell (In a grind they can actually eat) increases bone strength. Both are good.

I'm sure there was something I missed, but my basic opinion. I respect everyone eases, thought I probably don't agree.

Sorry...I forgot to mention. Just because birds, or any animals seam to like something....It doesn't mean that it is good for them!

Was that nice or what?

Can I say it much nicer?
