Our pet female raccoon kept all the other predators off the property. The only time Cookie killed our chickens was when she had kits. After they were rehomed, she went back to her old self. Kinda funny seeing her chasing the fox and sometimes people. We lived in the middle of a park system, sometimes people would hike onto the property. She didn't like that. Did you know that raccoons run really really fast? And they make some pretty evil noises!!! Strangely enough she didn't mind the possum who lived in the woodpile on the back porch. It would stick its head out and hiss at us every now and then. Never lost any chickens or ducks or geese with Cookie around.

Theres more of them!!! We saw one last night hubby followed it and set a trap up. no time to run to the house and get a gun. And my favortive most wonderful rooster is missing now. We picked up more cat food and were keeping it in the house now. Im also feeding the chickens in the morning instead of at night. NO more food out at night. Traps are set and im going to kill all coons in 50 miles. What else can i do? Also should i lock up the chickens or let them find safe spots to roost at night? They really dont want to sleep in the coop anymore. One hen camped out last night under my porch light. She really didn't want to go in. They don't feel safe unless we are out with them or their sleeping under a light. I feel really bad.
Secure the coop and make them sleep in there, they'll be safer. Sleeping under a light is no protection from a raccoon, they're bold as all get out and it will only highlight the location of dinner.

Thanks!! We fixed all the holes and only had one weird night. A leghorn was died and eaten inside but no signs of how the killer got in or out. There were a couple of barn cats that were sleeping in the coop. Theres usually one or two who do and the birds just boss them around. But we are not letting them do that anymore in cause one of them took the leghorn. Never had probelms with the cats before though.

The only thing that should ever be in your coop besides you is your chickens.
Keep trapping them. We were really suprised last spring when we trapped 13 racoons, some big some small. We were actually trying to stop the problem before it got started. We never lost any chickens to them, but all of our sweetcorn the year before. We started to notice something outside the coop in the early mornings and sure enough it was racoons.
While you are working on finding and fixing all the holes and killing all the coons, try a radio in your coop and leave it on all night. I swear it has helped keep the coons at bay here. When we had problems I put one in the barn and the coon problems stopped, then it quit working (it was old) and I didn't replace it, and the coons came back! So I got a new one and no more coon problems! I leave mine on a nice country station.
