That's funny! I must be a bad parent to my chickens as they're all free ranging with just a small, uncovered area they can go to where I feed/water them. They've got a covered roost, and that's it! My chickens don't have any problems playing out in the snow!
Congrats on the egg too! If you're BRs are like mine, you'll be getting a very steady stream coming in really soon!
Great idea - maybe at the Nationals they can add "Chicken Racing," - aside from that the path keeps them from ranging too far and not coming back to the coop. To relieve boredom you could stamp out some elaborate mazes and discover who is your smartest chicken?
What types of chickens are those? I have an egg that looks like that! It's in the incubator, and I have no idea what it is!!
They are Plymouth Barred Rocks and we just love 'em.

Later in the day, we did add more paths for them and for our enjoyment watching them, lol. You should have seen them trying to figure out how to get back to the coop. Priceless!
do they usually lay speckled eggs? I'm not sure if mine is Welsummer or Barred Rock (now I'm thinking it's barred rock). Are Barred Rocks production or ornamental chickens? Thanks. I guess I'll just have to wait two days to find out (when they hatch)... thank you!
I do believe they lay brown eggs in general, but can have some variances especially the first few eggs. So the speckling is probably just an abnormality.

They are called a dual purpose breed because they are very good egg layers and can be used for meat. Although ours are strictly for eggs, lol.
