But i have been told my hens which are buffs rocks and New Hampshires wasnt gonna lay till about Thanksgiving they are about 4 months of age. I dont know which one layed it I had went onto the coop to feed water and clean and it was just in the corner no hen around it. Anyone else have the same breed ? and if so about when did yours start laying ?
Pullets tend to start laying around 20 weeks of age. Rocks and Reds. Some lay later (24 weeks) some lay earlier (I've seen some threads with their first eggs at 15 weeks). They also need approxamately 14 hours of daylight. The earlier ones tend to be the production breeds, but I think the amount of light is just as important as breed. So if your pullet was to turn 5 months old during the months of Nov - Feb. I'm not sure she'd start laying until she got enough light to trigger the laying cycle.
So unless you just hatched your chicks, and you are giving them artificial light, I think Thanksgiving was wrong estimate.
