I'm so excited! I've got 6 chickens and I think they are all hens, and I'm getting 2 eggs a day from them. This started this week-and I'm thrilled! They are still small, but I don't feed them laying pellets so I'm not expecting them to be super huge.

I didn't have an egg in the box this morning so I fed and watered them and as I walked off I noticed one of them acting funny so I went up to her and she had an egg on the ground pecking at it.

Did it come out of the box, out of the coop and the to the ground, or was it laid by the chicken on the ground? Also, later in the day there was another egg. Am I under the mistaken impression that chickens lay eggs in the morning?

Chickens lay their eggs any time they want to. Mine will lay from 7am up to 4-5 pm. Just depends on when they started because it will at least be an hour later the next day. It takes a good 24 hours for their bodies to expel an egg. Congratulations though on getting eggs. Also if you are finding more on the ground in or out of the coop you could try some golf balls in the nesting boxes. It's cheaper than buying some fake eggs and they work just as well.
