Hello! We are brand new at raising chickens! We had some when I was a little girl but not since then. Then my toddler began going to daycare where they have chickens and it's all he could talk about so it inspired me to investigate the wonderful world of chickens. We chose 4beautiful birds. 1 black sex link (Cece), 1americana (Ester)' 1 Wyandotte (Dottie) , & 1 Rhode Island Red (kicken). They are all super cute! Cece is the smallest but most aggressive. We are currently making plans to build their new home. We live in city limits with a good size back yard that we don't really use too much. So it's going to be a lot of fun to have these lovely ladies around to liven things up back There. My oldest son is getting ready to graduate from high school. He has been snuggling his chick (Cece) all afternoon. "Why didn't we get chickens a long time ago mom" he asked... I wish we had :) we so look forward to this new adventure. And can use any advice and encouragement! :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks! Sounds like you will have a pretty little flock! TwoCrows gave you some good links to get you started, good luck with the coop build!

Hello all, I am new to having Chics on our small farm. I have 6 and they seem to be doing fine. My question is how much do you feed them? Do you keep fed out and available 24-7? Thanks for the help.

From what I understand most people do keep feed our 24/7. But some just feed and water a daily portion each day. I suppose it's what works best for you, your family and flock.

Yes, keep food, water and the heat going 24/7. They will eat and drink as they need. Lower your temp by 5 degrees each week for 6 weeks

If you need any tips and hints on raising your new babies, stop by our learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry. The first link is to raising babies and the second link is to the entire learning center. :-)

The chicks are doing great! I can't believe how fast they are growing! However... I have them in a card board box currently and so I a have no where to hang their food and water. They are going to be excellent foragers I think! One of them is about a week older than the others so she is teaching the younger ones how to scratch and peck... so their water particularly is always, almost as soon as I put it I there full of wood chips.. What can I do to revert this? They are crazy scratchers! Lol :/
