we lost one of our cats

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like she may have gave out to old age. You are very kind to take on dumped kitties. They are lucky.

I am relaly sorry for your loss - I have a special place in my heart for calicos. I do have one question, and I pray it does not sound crass. Was her neck broke, or did you notice? That had happened to one of my house cats many years ago, she got out through a window, we found her lying on her side, not a mark on her - but her neck was broke. Seemed a dog used her as a rag doll, broke her neck, and left her there. If you have any dogs that are near your barn, especially feral, you might want to keep a closer look out for your kitties.

I really am sorry - all my kitties, even the feral barn cats, are part of our family.

The barn is dog proof. The walk through doors are always closed unless we are out there. The only other entrance is a cat door, and the cats have to jump up on a sawhorse to get to it. Also, I have male barn cat that hates dogs. He will jump on and slice and dice any dog, except mine, that comes near his barn. He once went after a doberman and a wolf/husky cross that were coming at me. The cat was adopted and raised by a rooster when he was a kitten. Two dogs came in the yard and mortally wounded the rooster while he was trying to protect this cat and his sister. Ever since he saw his "father' attacked, he has had a deep hatred for dogs.

What sweet, beautiful memories you have of that cat! Thanks for sharing them and use them to soothe yourself too.
If it makes you smile and easier, we would be honored to hear more.
Sorry for your loss.
I wish Piper Safe Passage...

To me the ones that come to me are more special than the ones I pick out. It means they were meant to be with me. I'm glad your cat had a good and long life with you.
