We lost our first hen.

Hi Namaste.
So so sorry, you have had to experience what you have, i know maybe
others will not agree, but i do not believe your shepherd, mean"t to hurt her at all.
If she did, you would have witnessed, a worst site. Years ago one of our girls, flew
over the fence, like you i heard a noise, all i saw was feathers everywhere, and Tom
( shitzu) just going in for the kill. It was horrific, as there was no way he was letting go.
My husband heard me screaming at him, plus i was crying same time. My hubby gripped Tom, and he even turned on my hubby. It was horrific, but we managed to get him off.
Of course she passed in shock, in which in a way was a blessing. Although we would have tried our best to nurse her. But the damage Tom caused, was horrible. ( I hated him)
as she was also my fav. Tom was in the dog house for weeks. lol Did not allow him
in the garden at all. We still have him, now i had bred 16 then 5 yrs ago i forgot to
lock the doors on their coop. Never ever had a problem with foxes. Next morning went
to let them out, ( as forgot i had not locked their coops.) And seen my beautiful girls
wiped out. Feathers everywhere ripped to bits ect. But where the blighter got over the
6ft wall, they were too heavy to carry back over. It took until March this year, before
we had more. It was only because my husband and boys, knew how much i was miss having them, especially the fresh eggs, as i love baking. They said they would build a
new coop and run, further down the garden, near the house. And make it as fox proof as they can. Which they did, the boys bought me 8 POL for Mothers day and a week later
i bought 4 more. Our run also has a roof as well. My family noticed without my chickens
i was not the same person. lol Oh and my baking too. lol Although coops + run is secure
i still lock their coop doors, at night. (but that is me, cause i will always feel guilty, of that one night i forgot. As for Tom, i would not trust him, as far as i could throw him. wahhh
If i let them free range for a few hours, i make sure the dogs are in the house. But my
grandson, 27yr who we brought up, lives here with his girlfriend. He owns a white german shepherd ( Mitzy.) and she is amazing with them. I nursed chickens in the
house, and when everyone has gone to bed, she stays up with me. My girls when they
were better, but not ready to go back outside. I would let out of crate to walk around.
Mitzy would be fast asleep and my girls would wake her up, and she never flinched.
She loves them, we also have 2 bichone frise 11yr and 12yr, but them i would not trust. Your Tippet thought she was helping you, with carrying her, and held her to tight, bless her. We owned our own farm for years, and i use to breed G.S. They too
would herd my chickens / ducks into bed. All your replies are telling you, do not beat
yourself up, and blame yourself, or Tippet. As we have all learned by our own mistakes.
Still it was not nice for you, and thank you for showing that beautiful pic, of Maxine.
She was beautiful. :love
