We need a weird people behaviors section added to the forum

I got a ride into town yesterday with the intentions of just picking up feed, but when I got in there, they had chicks and ducks! They never have them before the beginning of April! I saw it as a sign from God that I should have Blue Swedish ducks, because the first bin I walked up to, that's what was in there!!! They were being sold in lots of 2, but I thought to myself, if I only buy two, what happens if they are both drakes? So I grabbed two more, just to be safe.

So I came home with four adorable ducklings. I did manage to avoid coming home with a bunch of chicks. I don't really know how I managed that though! I think it's cause they were breeds I didn't really want, or already have, and they didn't have any bantams. If they had had bantams, I probably wouldn't have been able to resist! The cashier said they were getting in more chicks today, but I don't have a car, so tempted as I might be to head up there, I have no way to get there, so my sickness can't be fed further. That is, until the 81 eggs in my incubators begin to hatch!!!!!

Here are my new little ducks:

Is this some of that weird chicken math?

Because by my math, you only has 23 chicks! 18 + 5 = 23 here!

See, you did well, only got 23!

Now you need two more......or 10..........

That's it! Plus the fact you just don't know how many (if any) roosters you're actually getting w/ a straight run order, right? You'd buy 12 just to increase your chances of getting one rooster rather than, oh, I don't know, just going ahead and ordering from a hatchery to begin with?

Good point. I'm going to have to go count my chicks again, but they never sit still long enough. I get a different count every time.

Need to figure out if I can't count or just can't add.

chicken_china_mom, your ducklings are absolutely adorable! I'm so glad our feed store didn't have ducks. My kids want some and it is so hard to say no when I really do, too, but just sort of know better.

We're not set up for ducks. I've said it a million times, and I'm hoping that I've brainwashed myself enough to resist the temptation should I ever be presented with fluffy little ducklings.

We're already getting 8 pilgrim geese in April. At least that is something we've been planning on for a year and I only got two more than I wanted because there was a minimum order at the place I found that had them!

Mine are much older and bigger- and I still THINK I hatched 21! Head counts are hard, they never stay in one place long enough!

When they were itty bitty I could transfer them to another clean brooder and count. Now? I just look for bodies, and try to count fast when they're asleep!

I've been toying with the idea of getting some geese, but am not sure which kind to get. I was hoping for a family friendly breed, something that will be good around my kids. I've been looking more at Pilgrim because I hear they are calmer. Chinese kind of scare me. However they could probably protect the yard better than my own dogs do! Lol!

Trust me, when you fire up the bator your "chicken math" skills will have to work overtime. There will be an endless amount of excuses

My husband and I tell each other that we might as well refill the incubator because we are already in the routine of turning the eggs, checking the humity, etc.

We also use the excuse that our kids love to candle the eggs and hear them cherping! All I can say, is you have all of our full support her at the BYC

We homeschool and this is part of my children's education. IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN! You wouldn't deny them an education, would you?

(That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.)
