We have our first lambs. They are 7 weeks old (we’ve had them for the last 7 weeks for one, and 3 weeks for the other). They are outside during the day, but not at night. However we are about to put them out 24/7.

I’m wondering who here pens their sheep up at night? And what do I need to consider for their pen? Do they need food in their pen? What flooring would you put? (Straw? Hay? Nothing?).

We weren’t going to pen up at night, but with predators etc- we’d feel more comfortable doing so…. But I’m just so confused what To do for the layout!

Do we include a light source in their pens? Or is that a problem?

Thank you !!
Sincerely, new lamb owner

(Pic included because why not.)

What kind of pen do you have? Is it on grass? Is there a roof?

I always penned my sheep up at night. They appreciate the protection from predators and shelter from bad weather. They do not need a light - sheep can see in the dark pretty well.

It’s on concrete, and has a roof , 3 solid sides and a gate type door.

Ooo good to know, I’ve heard mixed opinions on their night vision. So I wasn’t sure! Thank you!

You're welcome! Since it is concrete I would definitely put soft bedding down. Hay and straw are both fine. I also would put food in there as well as their supplements. Having hay on their stomach before going out to pasture helps prevent bloat.
