We've been free-ranging our hens in the afternoons. At dusk the girls put themselves to bed and my dh goes out and locks them in. (Thinking it would keep them safe from predators.) This evening, he strolled outside just in time to see a hawk come sweeping into the yard. My chickens scattered and got away.
We've not seen any hawks on our property before, but they are nearby the interstate that is about a mile from our house. I thought we'd be safe because our yard is so wooded, but apparently the hawk had enough room to try for a chicken dinner.
