We received some chicks in the mail last week and lost two in the first 3 days(out of 23 total) but just marked that up to the cost of ordering that many chicks - you're probably bound to lose a couple.

We have one that has been a favorite from the beginning. She is the runt for sure. She was the smallest when they came and I don't think she's growing as fast as the others either.

She seemed to be doing fine though, has been eating and drinking (and her favorite spot to fall asleep is right in the middle of their food).

However, today, we noticed she is very weak. She can hardly stand and when she does her head hangs down and a little to the side. We also noticed a limp. There are no noticeable scratches or injuries but it does look like maybe that foot is a little swollen and possibly a little less developed though it's hard to tell.

She also doesn't seem to be eating or drinking much.

I saw people on here recommending to feed them boiled eggs and sugar water, so I actually cracked open an egg(From some of our other chickens) in a mixing bowl, poured some sugar into that, mixed it together well, and poured that into some boiling water. Once cooked we fed her some of this sugar egg. She took a couple of tiny bites of it, but hardly seemed strong enough for that. We also mixed some sugar in her water but she doesn't seem too interested in that right now.

We don't have anywhere nearby to get store bought electrolytes.

What can we do?

Sounds like you are doing everything possible. Sometimes we don't know why chicks die. I had 3 chicks die the other day, fine in the morning and by evening they were weak. Its mother nature make sure the strong survive and the weak die. Its so sad when you feel helpless wanting to do every thing possible to save a chick. I've been there, many tears.

Just wanted to post an update on here - and hopefully pass along a little hope to anyone in a similar situation.

When we went to bed last night I was considering whether or not we needed to just put her out of her misery. I decided that if she got any worse we probably would, but we would wait until morning to see how she was doing.

She still wasn't doing great this morning, but we gave her some more sugary egg as well as some sugar water. She hasn't been eating and drinking as much as normal but she has been doing a little bit and I think that as she regains her strength she is doing more of both.

She is holding her head higher now though it is still a little lopsided and low. She is standing more steadily as well though she is still obviously weak. Overall she seems to be doing a lot better, but we are not out of the woods yet.

I'm pretty sure that if we had not intervened she would not have lived this long and we are hopeful that she will pull through.

We are especially rooting for her as she has become one of our favorites and is also the only one of her breed that we ordered.
