Weak/dying chicks.

I only gave them a tiny drop of corid and mostly water. They had VERY little of the medicated feed. I had to remove all the shavings and put them on towels. All day they've been digging like crazy, flicking all of the big pieces of shavings out and eating the small ones. Grr! One Cochin has a huge crop. I took their feed away to see if it'll go down and I massaged all of them a little. I think I've found my problem.

Great!
Keep an eye on them...little buggers are silly sometimes.

So sorry about your chicks...Maybe to save more chicks next time just order in chicks to your local feed store.

All chicks i have ever raised have been on pine shavings. They always have grit available. They have never had a problem . Their crop is supposed to be big and full after eating. Thats normal.

I never had a problem with pine shavings either.... until now. I had 2 different sets of chicks and a set of ducks on them years ago. I've only bought grit once in my life for my adults but I've never had a problem there either. This Cochin, named Penguin, has a much bigger, harder crop than the rest. Actually the biggest I've ever seen, even years ago when I had over 40, adults and chicks. He looks like my dog, who has a lympoma in his neck. They're like twins lol. They're all still active, some more than others (I'm talking about the mean Barred Rocks). Im not too concerned for the moment. I'm convinced these chicks are out to get me!

Chicks don't need grit until they are eating grass or foods other than their chick feed. But then they should get chick grit and later regular grit. The crop should be a little full, but since your dead chick seemed to have a big crop, crop impaction from the bedding was just a possibility. They should need Corid at this young age. Usually coccidiosis can become a problem after 2-3 weeks.

Except that grit helps if they are eating some bedding.
