Weapon suggestion

Do you have a particular firearm in mind? unless you are referring to a revolver with interchangable cylindars, 22lr and 22 mag are mutually exclusive in a long gun, but i would like one too, that's why I ask.

wow glad you caught that......my mistake it was shorts ,long ,and LR.......not the mag....mag are little larger in dia, also . My one that shoots mag .is mag only.

Darn... I can still wish, kind of like an over and under.

I also love the .17, but ammo is pricy, worse than 22 mag and bullet goes in and poof, disintegrates.

more ammo options in 22mag, and 22lr cheap to shoot.

tough choices, If i had to choose, I would choose based on longest shot needed and preditors expected. In SC not leagal to shoot foxes and some other pests with more than rimfire, and no scope. (and must have hunting license) legally speaking.

there is a rifle version of that pistol that changes out cylinders like nine rounds or so

you made me think though...an over and under is an option...could get a shotgun and rifle...had a .22 over a .410 that was real fun they made lots of variations

For what it's worth, I live on 20 acres that is by Ocala National Forest, so we always have critters that we have to deal with (rattlers and moccasins-including today). My weapon of choice is a Snake Charmer single shotgun. The bigger stuff- a panther that killed my neighbors new baby donkey and a bear my wife thought was the neighbors dog are protected, but I carry a SW 38 revolver if I'm out on my tractor near the back of my property.

In both cases, I keep a trigger lock with a combination on the weapons and unloaded unless I am carrying them. I have a case with a lock, but if I need the weapon, it is faster to dial in the combination than get the case open. Three grand-kids who are curious mean safety first at all times with weapons.

GREAT advice!

You can get whatever type of gun you can afford. .22, .223, 7.62X35. But if you ain't home to use it, it does you no good, chickens are still gone. Not shy about using a fire arm myself, but it ain't a cure all.

One hint paintball is not a good idea, because of animal cruelty laws.

You need to upgrade all areas of your security. It is not reasonable to believe you are going to be able to stand guard with your brand new gun 24/7/365. And if you ain't home the gun can't do it for you.

Here's
another option. Get your local gunshop to order, they usually charge a $25 fee to do the Federal Paperwork to transfer. This is a basic single shot receiver that changes barrels from 20 ga shotgun to .22 LR. The best of both worlds. I've fired them, they are very basic, inexpensive but accurate and absolutely reliable. With a single shot arm you will learn make your first shot count.

if getting a 22...get one that shoots LR and mag. LR for smaller predators mag for large dogs or predator.

There are NO rifles that can do that.

Theres's no need to make things more complicated than necessary
A Ruger 10/22 will do all the OP wants to do, is fairly cheap, and easy to learn to operate.
