Weasel in the coop.

1/4" gap? How could they get through that?
I misrepresented the gap in my first post. It was more like a strong ½" but less than an inch. I was typing from memory and did not proof read well. Thank you for drawing attention to my error. I since corrected the original post.

We found ne of our hens dead this morning...thought it was natural causes. Tonight, our remaining 2 hens were found dead out in their run area. We think a long tail weasel got them. We have seen weasels in our yard, but never thought anything of it. Now that we have a foot of snow on the ground in Northern NH, and it is below 0 , I guess they must have gotten hungry. We have had them through 2 winters without trouble...looks like we will have to start over in the spring....and we will have to figure out a better enclosure. We have regular chicken wire, but there were some voids on the bottom under the bottom boards. Should we bury the wire a few inches next time, or get a different type of wire?
We are heartbroken to have lost Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme....they were such good pets....

good thing you killed him they just keep on coming back and back for more blood, just got my trapping license so i can trap all the weasels around here.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a tough thing to lose them when you are attached.

Chicken wire is only good for keeping in chickens. You will need 1/2" hardware cloth. Weasels can and will squeeze through a very small opening. Lots of great info in the coop and run maintenance section of the forum and on the coop pages.

Thanks Terry H for the info....it sure is lonely without our chickens...I think we'll be building a bomb shelter to keep the **** weasels out...I don't feel the need to kill the weasels, but it IS a possibility. I know they get mice, etc...so they are not all bad....they are just being weasels......
