My week olds are on chick starter. Do they need grit? And should I be giving them anything else?

As some of you know, despite my weeks of research on the internet about chicks, I am very new to this, and have made some (funny) mistakes so far.

I always give my chicks grit on the 3rd day as my first hatchery recommended:

They filled up on it when I just gave them a whole container of it (until a week or two later).

A lot of people on here recommend no grit if you are on starter. However, I have seen my chicks eating shavings here and there. I don't want them to get it stuck in their crop.

There is chick grit, size#1. Some just use sand, but I never did so I couldn't tell you anything about it.

Then there is size #2 and #3 for the older ones. Depends on if you have gravelly soil as to whether to buy it.

Edited: I was just reading today that the gizzard is past the crop. So the grit won't help the crop- just the digestion.

I've never given any of mine grit and they seem to do just fine.

You'll see lots of different opinions on here about that. For me at least, grit is just another source of possible infection
