"weekend warrior" flock owners (with careers)

Congrats, professor, for taking the plunge. Raising chickens is a fun and rewarding activity, a good way to relax and de-stress, and their antics are endlessly amusing. Chickens are not normally considered very intelligent animals but they are much smarter than given credit for and they have a fairly sophisticated social structure which is quite interesting to watch.

If I arrive home after dark, I do no more than check on the chickens to make sure everything looks good in the coop and surrounding areas and then lock them in. I bring a flashlight with me but I try not to shine it in their eyes. You will not disturb them but they will be aware of your presence so you will likely hear them shifting on their roosts and one or two might even jump down, scrabble around for a bit then jump back up. I don't think I would recommend giving them treats or scratch after they have gone to sleep, it is something better done in the morning before you leave, or better yet, just on the weekends or during longer summer days if you are able to make it home before dark. I am not sure that feeding them so late, esp scratch, would be nutritionally beneficial, if you were even able to coax them off their roosts in the first place. Apart from that, in my experience chickens do not see so well in the dark. I once had a group of chickens that got shut out of the coop somehow one night and I found them sleeping on the ground outside the closed door. I was able to grab one without fuss but the others were spooked and ran and in their panic and haste constantly bumped into things that during the day they would normally have been able to avoid. It sure was a heck of a time chasing those birds down.

Anyway I wish you the best of luck with your chickens. They are wonderful animals, really quite independent and self-sufficient, and those eggs sure are delicious.

Best to let sleeping hens roost. But you folks who need to do chicken chores in the dark would benefit from having a head lamp. I love mine. It has 3 intensities of light, a flashing and a red light feature, and also tilts to varying angles. also great for reading after lights out, or when the power goes out. I don't know how I ever lived without one. I keep it right on the back of my kitchen chair so I always know where it is!

I second the headlamp!

My birds don't as a rule get up when I go out after dark. Occasionally, one of the lowest ranked hens will get up and eat while I'm out there at night, I think it's so she can eat in peace. Otherwise, they're not really going to hop down for scratch, etc. Once they're "in bed", they pretty much want to stay there.

I work full time also. In the mornings.Feed ,water, scoop poo off poop boards.open all the runs.spend a few minutes talking to them.lock their runs.off to the house to get ready for work.after work DH and I head to the coop with flash lights to retrieve their feed bowls.do a head count and make sure every one is safe in their coop.I do spend more time with them on the weekends.

I'm in the same boat with all of you. Only get to see my flock mornings, after dark and on weekends. To make things worse, my job requires frequent travel, so sometimes I'm gone for days. Sweet Pea doesn't mind checking on them and gathering eggs, but I have a large feeder and waterer so she won't have to worry about that. Getting chickens this past Fall has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I can't wait to go see them before leaving for work each morning, and go straight to the chicken house when I get home at night. I'm jealous of the people on this forum who get to watch and play with their chickens all day!

I usually do all my stuff as far as animals, gardening etc in the afternoon. I'm a construction contractor. I work a bit less during the winter than summer usually. Even though some years it's just as hectic lol. Summer time here in Texas drains your energy real bad. By the time i get off work i just want to collapse sometimes lol. I'm not really the weekend warrior but yes i do more maintenance as far as fences and checking things more thorough on the weekends. Mainly during the week i just stick to the feeding and watering then on weekends i do the other minor things. Anyways, i hear ya. One week i might only work the usual 40, but sometimes as much as 70hrs a week. The wife and kiddo also help out a lot around here. We all get involved.
