The poor thing. How did the dog owners reply when you told them? Did they offer to replace her? I know she cant be replaced....they are individuals....but getting another might help with the loss. However...the dog WILL be back...now that it knows where a meal and chase are. Load the gun, and be ready....and by ALL means...be carefull!!!

Personally, I don't want to carry the karma after killing a neighor's pet. I have a terrier that would chase my own chickens, if I let him. I don't.

I've had neighbor's dogs kill my chickens before, when I let them free range. Cut little cockapoos whose owners couldn't believe they had happily run into my fenced yard and killed five hens. After I appeared on their porch with the story, and a dead chicken in hand, they got rid of the dog. Of course, I now do not free range my chickens. All predators need to be kept from chickens, like little kids from falling down stairs.

It's not the dog's fault if they are killing chickens because their owner lets them run loose. I trap wild cats and take them to the shelter. I would catch a neighbor's dog and do the same. Paying an impoundment fee is incentive for keeping a dog in a fenced yard. A friend just shuts the gate behind dogs that are in her barnyard after her small livestock. She then catches them and takes them to the shelter. You could probably call animal control to come and get them, too.
