Do chickens ever go into a deep sleep like humans do...REM sleep??? Every time I check on my girls at night they are always wide awake....obviously because they heard me coming. Do they just sleep with "one eye open" all the time?? Mine will sometimes take a little snooze during the day, but it doesn't last very long.

Just a random thought that ran across my mind. I have never snuck up on my chickens like I can with my cats. :):cd

Not a weird question at all. I have never caught my girls sleeping (not since they were in the brooder) and I often wonder if I ever will. I think the only way I could do it is to put a camera in there with them. I wonder what chickens dream of?

I would assume that they don't just because they are prey animals. I was just talking to my husband about a camera in the coop so I can see what they do....lol.

I think mine sleep like logs, lol. Once it's dark in that coop, it's lights out in more ways than one!

I can go into the coop with a torch at night and touch them all (even the rooster) and whilst they will occasionally mutter a quiet "bockle, bockle" to me they are really quite out of it!

From what I can tell, they sleep pretty soundly from about 9pm to 4am - but that's just my flock. They are all different I'm sure.

Yes chickens go into deep sleep. I've seen my chickens start to dream, eye movement,I think most animals can REM sleep.

It is!!!! I love it when I see my chickens do that. What's funnier is when my dogs are dreaming and are moving there legs like there running in the dream!!!!

I would love to see my chickens in a deep sleep...it probably would be fun to watch. My cats do that just like your dog, sometimes they even meow. I wonder what they are dreaming about.

My dogs are always running in there dreams :D my girls don't expect treats I usually don't have them so they don't go crazy when I go out.

I have often wondered the same thing! I don't know if one of my roosters ever sleeps. Every time I go outside in the middle of the night (which is quite often), if I make any noise at all, he will start crowing. The coop is a good 70 yards from my house, so he can hear pretty good too. My other 2 roosters don't make a sound. Is it common for roosters to crow in the middle of the night?
