when ever my roo acts all tough, you know crouch down attempt to get his side to you with an open path to pounce/spir/flog you? one of my hens, gets inbetween him and me and pecks his face! If he does "one up me" with a successful hit she jumps on him, as if to spir him! what a kind sweet gesture right? He then jumps on her, and then I go in to break it up to defend her. I am integrating my 8 week old pullets to the flock, it hasn't been 24 hours yet and when I go to check on them, handle them to ensure they are still in good health, and 2 of them squat for me when I pet them (??) they are sooo tiny to be doing this! suppose it is all the crowing the big boy roo does? Does anyone else have any strange chicken behaviors?

alb: Welcome to BYC!

That hen is protecting her momma! The one that feeds her and loves her! And so much more! :)

The squatting business is a funny thing around our house! Our little house chicken Maria - Silkie - will squat when I set her down or pick her up! I'll massage her back close to her tail and she'll do all the goofy things a hen does while being mounted. Then when I stop I tell her to shake it off! LOL She'll shake real good and then go on about eating grass and finding bugs.

A suggestion on the roo! Get you a spray bottle with a good long stream on it. Whenever he starts doing the attack mode thing? Give him a good spray with the water. He'll soon learn you mean business and will hopefully STOP that attack business! It's worked for me before!

Thank you so much for the idea! I have a squirt bottle that will work perfect. He actually just charged be from the inside of thenrun and I was out. Then went to spir my princess who protects me. So I went in the coop slippers and all with my training stick and told him to leave her alone! I care way too much for my birds I suppose :D

I've been know to run into the coop in my slippers and pajamas, so I can just imagine it!

One of my hens is also a little spit fire. She kicks my roosters butt on a daily basis. Every time he mates her, she protests quite loudly. Then, when he gets off, she'll chase him around the run and peck the crap out of him. Funniest thing ever. Chickens are weird...

Yes chickens are quite entertaining! And they come to prefer one Roo of their choose! Have had it happen time and time again!

I believe we have you beat on the caring department! In a sort of different way that is! Our kids are house chickens! LOL

My Molly and your Avatar could be twins!

Well, he's the only rooster, so she doesn't have many options. And, she squats for him, the little weirdo!

I've had chickens in the house, but not permanent house chickens!

That hen in my avatar is Wendy, my favorite girl, she's such a sweet lady :love

My Molly loves to act like she's dusting on a fuzzy rug I have in front of the door here! LOL She does the whole showing of it. Digging with her beak, flopping one wing then the other!

FYI: Molly sleeps in a clothes basket. I have a pillow on the bottom, then an ice pack. A folded small towel on top of the ice pack and then a small towel folded on top of that. Then a thin large handkerchief type thing over it all. After I put her in it I cover her up with a fuzzy blanket! I guess you can figure I do a lot of laundry consisting of towels?

Yeah your hen is out of luck if there's only one Roo! Talk about being between a rock and a hard spot!
