I have 7 laying hens. We had 7 eggs yesterday. Today, there have been a total of 6 normal eggs so far, plus one hen is still sitting in her nest so I expect a 7th any time now.
In addition to these 7 eggs, on the poop board, there was what appeared to be a broken egg. When I rolled it toward me, I realized it was our first soft-shell egg, and it was completely intact. It looked perfect, but the outer "shell" was leathery and flexible. More bizarrely, next to this egg, splatted on the poop board, was a whole egg yolk and a smattering of egg white, but no shell or coating of any kind--not even the tiniest piece.
What the heck? Who laid eggs 8 and 9? How can we end up with a TOTALLY shell-less egg?
All the hens are acting totally normally, by the way. (Not sure what I expect--maybe one of them to have a mischievous glint in her eye?
