We've had 2 eggs in the last 3 days that look like they tried to crack coming out(?), & have a bubble or flat spot. Today the weird egg had a tiny round really dark one next to it. Ideas?

Not unless they found it. They roam on free on about 2 of our 6 acres. We do keep them supplied with Southern States layer/breeder crumble & field corn, & are chemical free, but who knows what they might find in the woods.

Our hen that went broody was laying some oddly shaped eggs right before she stopped laying. One egg looked partially cracked, but the shell was solid.

Others had ridges around them or were very long.

How old are your hens and how long have they been laying? Odd eggs are common with new layers (often due to immature shell glands), but with older hens it could be due to stress, disturbances during the egg shell calcification process, certain diseases, or nutritional deficiencies. If you could post some pictures of the eggs I could try and give you a better explanation.

The crack is all the way around the egg, but it is still 'solid'. The tiny round one was with it that day. Our hens were 1 this April. Not sure if it's a Barred Rock, Buff, or Sexlink laying, we have all three.

The white one's shell got broken during the calcification process, when the shell is formed, and got mended again before lay. It happens when the hen gets stressed or gets a sudden shock during the calcification process.

The small brown one is what we refer to as a "fart" egg. It's more common in young layers before they get their reproductive systems in gear and can be seen with active layers from all ages. If you crack these eggs open you will find most of them contains albumen, but do not have a yolk. It is nothing to be concerned about, it just means the hens' reproductive system didn't release a yolk before it started producing an egg to enclose it. Causes for this is stress or a sudden shock that disturbed the hen's reproductive cycle.

Thank you! All of this is new & I appreciate the help! 14 of our girls were a year old in April & have been laying for about a year. We have some 7 week old chicks, but doubt they're to the laying stage yet.The black snake we found in the nesting boxes yesterday night explain some of the shock too...
