Weird Egg

The crack is not leaking and the whole egg is hard as a rock. I stuck the crack with a then stick and it was hard as a rock as well.

My girl is a year and eight months old and this only started happening recently
Thanks. That is a head scratcher. Somethings amiss inside...could be jumping down from on high...or shelling gland is malfunctioning.

Has she molted this year?
Funky eggs can happen during slow down of production prior to molt.
Any illness?

Sometimes we cannot find finite answers.
You might just have to wait and see if it resolves.

She did her first molt about 2-3 months ago. She stopped laying during that time but after her molt was finished she started laying again and the eggs did not have the crack at the time. She has only laid 1 egg since the picture but it was soft. In her defense it has been extremely hot here for over (around 110 to 115 during the day and no less that 80 at night). I think soft egg was heat related.

I followed the recommended height for the roosting bars so I hope that's not it because it would suck to have to rebuild that part.

I guess we will wait and see. Her eggs still taste good and she's happy being a chicken so that's all that counts.

The whole thing could be heat related, especially if she's never laid cracked eggs before.
Older birds can stop laying due to shortening days, even if they've already molted, so it could be a production slow down glitch.

the recommended height for the roosting bars
..and which recommendation would that be?
Don't recall really seeing a hard number, just that they are a foot above nests.

I got the same thing today. I'm glad yours fixed itself. I hope mine will too!
