I got a weird egg today - it was uneven and not their usual color and with a very thin and bumpy shell. Even the yolk looked a bit abnormal to me - larger and a bit unevenly colored. None of my girls are very interested in oyster shells or their own crushed up shells so I assume it’s a calcium thing? I’m sure it’s just a fluke but even within the soft eggs i’ve gotten in the past this one is a bit abnormal. The chickens are 4.

Hi, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

That may vary according to productivity of the hens but also what is fed.. "layer" feed has enough calcium for most average producers to never need access to an extra calcium source on the side. Verses those who feed "flock raiser" will go through more oyster or egg shells relatively.

I’m sure it’s just a fluke but even within the soft eggs i’ve gotten in the past this one is a bit abnormal. The chickens are 4.

So that looks like a mottled yolk and a shell gland hiccup.. many things will be reducing in quality with age.. eggs especially.

The following link is a decent one.. Anything it says can happen to new layers can also happen to older layers and though disease is a possible cause for most things.. all the clues together should paint the clearest picture.

Don't miss out on the cool video in that link if you have the time.

Thanks - i’m just gonna keep an eye. to try and figure out who it was and see if happens again. I’m gonna guess is just a bit of a error in the process or someone is a little low on calcium based on the overall symptoms. Other than that all the girls are acting happy and healthy! :)
