Weird foot puss things (not an abscess or bumblefoot)

Bumblefoot cysts are very hard if left too long. If I have a bird that is showing signs of bumblefoot that has become swollen, also a staff infection, we lance it, remove yuck stuff and then put Wonder dust for horses. It is a drawing agent that helps remove proud flesh or what some call built up scar tissue. Works great for quick healing. Bumble foot reminds me of heel spurs in people which is calcium like deposits form from excessive pressure from standing long periods.

Might it have been compacted dirt and fecal matter, like what happens when they get mud balls on the toes? Those can be really, really hard. I found this older article elsewhere, seems similar, pictures of the 'after' in this case if you scroll down a bit: https://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/902695/

That had crossed my mind too - I had a pullet that was walking just slightly different a few days ago, when I inspected her foot she had a rock that was "glued" in with some poo into the crevice of her foot. I dug that out and she was happy. If i had not noticed (I watch chickens way too much) that would have gathered more poo/dirt, etc. and hardened in there.

So I have a Barred Rock and she has not been roosting and she has lost a lot of weight. I saw a growth on the intermediate interdigital web on each foot. I thought they were an abscess so I took her to the vet and the dude just pooped these hard little puss(?) things out. He squeezed it like a pimple. He thought they could be gland secretions but there are no glands in that area of the foot. And there was one on each foot in the same spot. He is an experienced vet that has worked with chickens and he had never seen them before. He suggested some things to me to get her weight back on and get her feeling better and we sent her poo off to check for parasites. I washed her little feet and I am trying to keep them clean. I also consulted with a friend that has had chickens much longer than I have. and she didn't know either.

But what the heck are these things?
Perhaps the hen stepped on something and it was an infection? Puss signals there is an infection in the wound, but I don't know if that's it. Hope this helps:)

You're welcome! Might be a good idea to check feet periodically, especially after rainy, muddy periods, since your soil type seems to be one that makes the formation of these possible. It may have started out very, very small, just stuck in a crease or crevice, and built up over time.
