Weird hole in my egg.

There is a hole in my egg and it looks like there was a calcium build up around the whole. I have only had my chickens (IsA Browns) for about 8 months. They are lay an egg a day now. I noticed a egg which had a hole in to the egg shell but not through the membrane yesterday. Then today an egg had a hole but has what looks like a calcium build up in it. I was told it could be worms. There doesn’t seem to be any thing else wrong with the eggs once cracked open. I attached a picture of the most recent.

Hmm, I’ve never seen/heard of that before, maybe she laid it still quite wet and flexible and pecked it and then it hardened into a hole and that “buildup” is just the eggshell that was pushed to the side

An egg shell does not "harden" after it's laid. When an egg passes by the shell gland, and the shell material is laid down, the egg is then as hard as it will ever be. I'm guessing that you have a bird which has some sort of issue with her shell gland. I highly doubt that worms are an issue. A hen who is grossly infested with round worms can occasionally pass an egg which has a worm in it, but that is a very rare occurrence.

rest assured a worm didnt do that. do you give them free choice calcium ? My GUESS is a weak spot in the shell or an egg eater .

I give them layer feed and mix in old ground up egg shells in their food. I have not had another egg like this since posting. Only this one and one similar that had a small hole that looked like it was caused by a peck or my 7 year old may have bumped it when she got the eggs that day. I will continue to observe our eggs.

I am really surprised no one has seen this before on here. I have looked up many articles and can't find an answer. Hopefully it is just an anomaly.

I have had an egg with a perfect little hole in it before (no calcium build up like yours though), like a hole the size maybe a ballpoint pen tip could poke through, but the shell was perfect in every other way, membrane in tact, no cracks. Pretty bizarre. I just made sure we ate it the same day since the hole seemed an avenue for bacteria to get it. I know which girl laid it because she is the only one that lays that color. She has not had problems since. She is healthy. I assume it was because she is a new layer, but I honestly do no know the cause. It definitely seemed as if the egg had been laid with the hole, not that the hole was pecked or somehow created after the fact. Sometimes her shells have little speckles/bumps on them.
