Hi friends,

Longtime lurker, first time poster. We have two hens, one of whom just started laying eggs last week (!!!!) and we were/are expecting the other to start soon.

This morning I found one egg around 9am and assumed it was from the hen who has already been laying. Just now I went back and found two eggs that weren't there earlier -- one of them looks normal and the other looks a little weird (see photos).

Questions are:
- What is going on w this egg?
- Is it normal for a chicken to lay more than one egg a day?

Thank you so much in advance for any help!

I think your other girl just layed her first egg! Congrats! It is possible for one to lay 2 in one day... but not likely. It takes new layers a while to *work out the kinks*. A few of their eggs might be a little odd until their body gets things worked out.
Just make sure you have supplemental oyster shell for them to keep the eggshells strong.

Thank you! It's just so weird that there were three today. I checked at 7am too (can you tell I'm eager???) and there was nothing, then one, then two. So three eggs were definitely laid today.

I also heard them making the stereotypical "buk buk buk buk-AH" "chicken noise," is that related to egg laying?

Also is the one that looks weird damaged?

Chickens stand up just before laying an egg. Make sure you have a lot of nest material in the nest box, to cushion the egg. Otherwise it may crack or break when it drops. I use straw. 20170727_101931.jpg .GC

OHH haha wow I didn't even think of that -- that it might have cracked from falling. There is straw in there but maybe not enough. Thank you!

:welcome It looks like it might be on the soft shelled side but like GC-Raptor said, pretty normal for brand new layers and make sure they have calcium in either laying mash or most people buy it and leave it out for them to indulge when they want to. Congrats !
