Hi! So my girls have been laying for almost a month now. One of the girls tagged a bit farther behind, and she’s been laying for about a week and half to two weeks. The first egg we ever had was thin-shelled and laid on the roost tray, and therefore was a bit of a snack for the chickens. This most recent egg is the second egg I have found on the tray, but it was a bit different. We get our eggs at different times of day, so this could have been laid around 9 AM. There was a very thin shell broken at the top, and it had clearly been sucked dry by my girls. But lying beside it was this pink, fleshy sac. I decided to... touch it (I washed my hands thoroughly after!), and it seems to have been either part of the egg or around the egg at some point. This has never happened to me!

My girls do also poop normally and regularly, this was the only abnormal poop/egg laying I’ve really had (besides two mutant eggs about the size of grocery store eggs).

Attached is a picture of this sac. I looked as close as I can at it, and it didn’t seem to have any veins or anything that could denote it as a part of the body. It also ripped apart quite easily. My theory is that it was part of the egg as an underdeveloped shell, and the girls just picked it away before eating the egg. It also seemed to be completely covered in egg white, so I’m assuming it was just part of the egg. Let me know if this is concerning!!

It’s a soft shell. It should be harmless, as ‘hiccups’ do happen sometimes, but keep an eye out for straining or lethargy. Are you feeding layer? Try offering some oyster shell on the side.

Yes! I’ve been doing layer and oyster shells, trying to put out multiple sources for my girls. Thank you for letting me know! Maybe she just didn’t get enough for today’s egg!
