Hi everyone, one of my chickens has laid this really odd, and worryingly big, red mass. All of them seem to be acting normal. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Can you cut it in half and post another picture of the contents? It is likely a lash egg from salpingitis (inflammation of the oviduct,) but it could be another abnormal egg if there is yolk inside.

That looks more like a ruptured follicle, B
but I may be wrong. It is not a lash egg. @Wyorp Rock may be better at calling this one. Has you hen been laying recently or have you found any soft or shell-less eggs lately?
They've not been laying much recently as the nights are only just drawing out. There have been a couple of eggs with hardly any shells on though. What do I need to do if it is a ruptured follicle? I don't know which of the chickens it came from

You may want to give the hen a human calcium with vitamin D tablet for up to 7 days, if you can figure out which one laid that red object. Do any seem lethargic or separating herself, or do any have their tail down? Here are some other threads where some abnormal red eggs were laid:

Not really tbh. There's only 7 of them so I'll give them all those tablets for a week just to be on the safe side. Thanks for that 👍
