My rooster won't stay out of the nesting boxes and he's harrasing the hens when they are trying to lay. Any ideas as to why he's doing this?

Maybe he is stuck between GOOD & EVIL. and thinks he is a hen...

Now that was only to make you chuckle......

Do you think he is extremely active and just luvs your hens.??? What is your roo to hens ratio.? And does he really bother the hens or just being chummy ?

What do you mean by harassing the hens? Trying to mate? or other behaviors?

My roosters often go into the nest boxes to rearrange the bedding, and show the hens what big manly males they are by finding such a lovely place for the ladies to lay their eggs, they then stand guard while she lays and help her announce her egg by crowing after she starts her egg song.

He probably wants kids, a lot of roosters do this, it's just one of his jobs, how many hens does he have, and are they in a pen, he may not have enough to keep him busy, so he's come up with that as his job. He sounds responsible.

How old is he?
Cockerels will do this because they are hormone induced idiots, not likely an adult rooster would behave this way.
I had a cockerel who would stalk the nests and try to jump the hens when they came out...he was delicious.

He has 5 hens. He just stands there making a growling noise at them and then gets in the nesting box with them and then they get fed up and get out. Then he just sits in there. Seems to me like he's guarding the boxes.
I think he's messing with my egg production. If I had no plans to raise more he would be in my crock pot. ;)
They're young, I just got them in feb at a week old.
One day I grabbed him out of the box and locked him in the guinea coop for a couple of hours and I actually got more eggs.
Thanks for all your info, I'm still learning behaviors and this helps me a lot!

I also forgot to mention that I had them in another coop before. It was a small coop with 6 nesting boxes and a perch.
I had so many problems with my roo and the hens going in the guinea coop and my roo would chase all my little guineas out and eat their food. He would stand guard at the door. They were also sleeping in the nesting boxes and pooping all in them. He pecked me several times and was getting a serious attitude. They all thought they ran the place and they were free ranging. I had so many problems that I just moved them to my larger coop and penned them up. Plus I was trying to keep these mites at bay and I think they just kept on getting them because we have a lot of woods.
Maybe that has something to do with it as well? He was so used to sleeping in the nesting boxes and I couldn't get him out. Problem is solved now, well the sleeping in the nesting box anyway.
