for a while now i have been getting eggs that seem rather long and narrow. i think it is one hen laying the, since there is never more than one a day, and they are always the same shade of brown. i will try to get a pic of it today if there is one, tomorrow if not. they really don't fit right in the egg cartons. any ideas what is going on and is it possibly a sign of something i should be worried about?

I don't think that you should worry. Just make sure your hens get enough calcium. If a hen is very old sometimes the egg shapes could change I suppose, or if she has just started laying. I have also gotten some strange eggs a few times in a row but my hen is just fine. So you shouldn't worry :)

the eggs are properly hard, so i don't think calcium is an issue (they get layer crumble and oyster shells in addition to whatever they free range). the hen is only a little over a year old, and the eggs weren't shaped this way until a month or so ago, and the change is what caught my attention (that and the fact that they don't fit right in the cartons)

Right now I have a hen who recently switched to laying whit-ish eggs instead of brown eggs. I don't know why but she seems just fine. I'm not sure if diet might affect change in egg shape but maybe there is some new type of plant or something in your area where they free range. But if your chicken are acting fine and just the shape of the egg has changed you really shouldn't worry.
