I'm in Sacramento
the raccoons come up at night from the rivers through the drains
I smell skunk often
see a wild turkey every now and then
there might be some of those other critters down at the river but never see them up in the neighborhood
not impossible, but unlikely

If there are rivers then any of the muskalids (native to the area you are in) are likely.

BTW, fox urine is particularly strong during their breeding season.

dogs chased off something I didn't see again this afternoon
and then went crazy tracking scent in the back of the yard

I want to see it so I think I'll get a game cam
I am guessing it's a neighborhood cat but it could be something wild
we will see

A fox will mark its territory just like a tom cat. Fox smell similar and almost as bad as a skunk. Whatever it was, it will be back.
