Hi all thanks for all the advice over the years, I finally have a question that I can find no information on. I just noticed a “tumor” on the bottom of one of my chickens. It’s covered with red skin and I originally thought it looked like a large cyst. When I examined it it felt hard, and I noticed that it was egg shaped. It looks as if an egg somehow formed under the skin, as I could practically get my fingers all around it. I’ve tried to find out what this is called, to see if it is common, or can be treated, however I’m not coming up with anything.

Has anyone out there heard of this, know what it is called, or have advice on treatment?

Thanks in advance

Oh dear. She could be laying internally, although they generally just dump the internal contents of the egg and not the eggshell and all into the abdomen. If so, it isn't good news for her. Is she laying at all?

I think she is still laying, I currently have 3 chickens that all want to share the same nesting box, so it is sometimes hard to tell. She seems to be the one that spends most of her time in there.

How long has she been like this? If you suspect it may be a prolapse try putting sugar on exposed tissue, this often helps shrink tissue. She should be separated from other birds for her own safety,b/c if it is a prolapse other birds may peck/pick and could pull out intestines due to exposed tissue.

If you can post a photo it would help with determining what could be the issue.

Thanks, I’ve looked at the links above, this could be the problem, I will take a better look when I get home. I think she’s been like this for a couple of days at least. I will also take a couple of pictures and post them.

Here are two pictures. I put an egg in the second picture to show the scale. From what I can tell the vent is not prolapsed. The egg seems to be a fair distance away.

What's the brown dot on the thing (for lack of a better term)? Is that a bumble or head? Or is it just dirt?

It’s not dirt, it looks like either small scab that has healed up, or something like a black head.

Can you find/see the vent opening,b/c it looks almost like vent(cloaca) is inverted with possibly egg trapped inside. The internal cloaca is exposed when egg laying, but retracts after egg has been expelled, with your girl it looks as if cloaca is twisted underneath and inside, find the opening and remove egg.
