My SLW just started laying last week, and has been fairly dependable from the start. She didn't lay yesterday, or all day today which seemed weird. Then tonight while she was out, she got very quiet and puffed up, then all of a sudden, PLOP! Only this egg didn't have a hard shell, just membrane, and had a strange piece of tubelike tissue (???) beside the yolk. About 5 minutes later, she "laid" a yolk by itself, with no membrane at all!
She seemed a bit shocked, but after a couple minutes she perked up and I gave her some plain yogurt. Then she walked back to her pen and I put them all in for the night.
Should I worry? She seems fine now. I am going to be doubly sure they are getting calcium every day and have some oyster shells available all the time. I've read so many horror stories of internal layers and all the troubles they can have......when should I worry about Betty? She lays beautiful brown eggs!
Thanks for any advice!
