Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

I got a scalpel and everything I needed set it all up and it went great not much blood til I cut into good tissue on the top part of her foot! I grabbed my needle and thread drenched it
in 91proof rubbing alcohol and John Wayned it! You'll would of been proud! That she didn't bleed to death lol!

You go, girl! Congrats! I had a young Oregon Gray hen poult with an infected sinus and brought her inside to drain it as it was putting a lot of pressure on her eye. DH stepped in and offered to help just as I sliced in and pus gooshed out. He didn't pass out, which is a huge improvement, but said "I'll be leaving now". That was Friday evening and she is back in the general population with just a little residual swelling. She had a dose of Tylan right after surgery and is perky and has a great appetite. She's tagged for the Thanksgiving dinner group, I don't keep birds that have been ill for breeders.

What a day...

Lost the hen, it was EYP and she prolapsed as well... at least it was quick... woke up with torn nail duck curled up on my chest, she is playing up this owie...

Lav Orp got sick of the Leghorn boy and beat him up until the coop popped open, spent an hour trying to catch that stupid flighty thing... turkey bit my finger first thing, so I'm slinging blood around while trying to gather up the birds for sale... and the grow outs got loose just as I was trying to box most of them up, so didn't get rid of half of what I wanted to...

Ohiki had a hidden nest and hatched 2 chicks, but is still setting on a bunch of eggs...

And one of the Silver Calls went broody, in a bad spot, lol...

Now I've got to bathe a dog and 2 cats thanks to the nasty flea population explosion lately...

The up side? Storm blew over us without dumping but dropped the temp 20°... got a nice cool breeze going...

Sorry about your layer. I wish I took the time to analyze my losses, but once a hen hits 3 I know the production reds are on borrowed time.

Our son was "home" over the weekend, he played 2 concerts so he really wasn't home much. The door got shut between the two rooms occupied by the growing cockerels and turkeys, so half of them went without food or water for probably 36 hours. No casualties but boy were they thirsty...temps were around 90. The babies were completely dry with no food, so it looks like he just gathered eggs. Good thing we have auto feeders and waterers for most of the flock.

Vacations are tough when you have birds and animals. Bottom line is that NOBODY will do things as well as you do, and that is a concern. For this trip we had a young girl (grand daughter of the princess's best friend) stay at the house and take care of things. She did a really good job. Problem is that she will soon return to college. My usual caretaker does not 'house sit' so we take our house dog (surrogate daughter) to our daughter's usually.

Even though our setup is 90% attention free over the course of a day or two, we find that asking someone to look after them usually ends up with more casualties than leaving them entirely alone (eggs excluded). The rollout boxes can only collect so many before they back up.

Well at least it wasn't with the cat

my plan is by next spring garden, everything will be grown in raised beds. I tried hay bale gardening. pretty much a failure, except for green beans. nothing else thrived.

peppers-nope
tomatoes-nope
squash-nope
cukes-nope

pretty disappointed with it. on the positive side, I do have lots of composted hay bales to put in the raised beds......lol

oh, let me share these.

hurry and put my chickens in here Pappadaddy!!

chickens and kids!!

boys hard at work, while I supervise from the shade. the real work was done on the first course of blocks, getting each one level, and level with each other. course had a little more to do, with trimming blocks to size. ya'll can see why I had to get in and start weeding the okra.......lol.
