Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

I'm not sure which color @minihorse927 lost - but I had been looking at my very grey (they call'em silver - so fancy!) boys, thinking that was just going to be my lot in life. But gold flecks are something new and exciting!!

Pictures? Pictures?

Hummm?

In my family we refer to two types... Mexican & Tex-Mex. Seriously though, living an hour away from the boarder, we mostly just call it 'food'. We get a lot of out of town military spouses working around here. I remember checking out at the grocery store one day & the cashier was all excited & said, "Looks like its gonna be Mexican night tonight!" Huh? :confused:I was totally confused, I stared at the conveyer belt. I was just buying groceries & I had no idea what she was talking about. I was still trying to process it walking to the car. I eventually figured out that I make a lot of 'Mexican Food'.

We definitely have local olives! I don't know about cheese... Rumanio cheese comes from northern California. Its good, but I get most of my cheese from Tillamook up in Oregon.

My #1 comfort food is tacos, followed closely by anything with potato in it... Baked potato, mashed potato, double stuffed potato, scalloped potato, hashbrown casserole, fries ... I just realized I havent eaten all day & I'm starving!!! :drool

I find it interesting what people cook...especially what starches they rely on. It tends to be ethnic, or cultural influences etc.

Spouse is from almost zero cornmeal, wheat flower only, heavy potatoes.

My dad's side was lots of cornmeal, wheat was only for fancy bread and egg noodles. Light on potatoes, mostly just baked, or cubed and roasted. Oh, we did eat wheat tortillas, but also corn.... and corn chips of course.

My mom's mom, that woman embraced the invention of boxed and canned food with a vengeance!

Well, it all started with a neighbor about a half mile away who decided to raise sheep. She must have purchased 100 or more, and gave little thought to their night time safety. Pretty soon, she had a resident mountain lion who was eating like a champ! So, when she finally figured out how to protect them, Mr. Lion was not about to leave this neck of the woods. We had a pretty secure structure of a wire pen (top, sides) which apparently does no good as protection if the little gate to get in to the structure is left open! Go figure.
So, Gertie was carried off into the night and devoured in another neighbor's front yard (i got the "Mom, on my way to work, there were vultures all over Miss Joanne's yard" - call from son). We ended up giving away the other goat (he was very attached) to a friend with the same breed. Now we just have chickens and a couple dogs and cats who have thus far not fallen victim to the same night burglar.
we have em in the Lagunas and in my area of the desert... They will walk down the street looking for a yappy dog... Take out.

Mule deer are their main prey so Goats and sheep are soo ideal...

We had goats for a few years to clean out a "no-man's-land" on our property that was covered in poison oak. They did a great job... and then the mountain lion decided our little neighborhood was homey and full of deliciousness...
I never had the problem, but I've heard of people with young children that like to cuddle & love on their pet goat, then get poison ivy or poison oak 'cause the goat's been in it & the oil's on his coat.

Never even heard of that!

Sounds like something they would eat in New England. ..but none of your folks are from that area...right?

Finally caught up! I was gone all day yesterday, so had 371 posts to catch up on. I've been sitting in the pickup most of the morning watching DH fish in the rain. Perfect opportunity to get caught up.

Fish - have learned how to smoke and can salmon this year, and many ways to prepare it. We've eaten enough salmon this past month, I think I've had my fill. My favorite way of eating it for a meal is when DH smokes and grills it. We like to either broil our halibut, or cut it into chunks, bread it and deep fry it. As far as fish from home, my favorite are perch, followed closely by walleye. Usually lightly breaded and fried until crispy on the edges.

Comfort food - tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches.

K - hope all goes well with your appt. on Friday! Was it you that asked if my or could put the chickens in a more secure pen? If I were home, I'd do it, but I won't ask her to. The only way she could catch them is when they're roosting, and the ones that were left the other day are the ones that roost about 7' up in the rafters. She'd do it if I asked her to, but I don't want her to take a chance on getting hurt.

Phil - never underestimate your "usefulness". When you are covering people in prayer, you are still protecting them by asking for it. I know, not the same as physically donning the uniform, but important just the same. You do so much in the way of helping and encouraging others!

FMF - didn't get a chance to celebrate your brother's news the other day. So good to hear!

Ravyn is getting goats? Enjoy!

Shaw is going back to work. I have a few more weeks yet. School starts the day after Labor Day.

DH and I did tourist stuff yesterday. Went to Seward, AK and took a day cruise to Kenai Fjord National Park. We saw two tidewater glaciers - they were breathtaking! We also got to see humpback whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and sea otters. And birds of all kinds.

Thank you!
Sounds like y'all had a wonderful time! I'd love to be able to do something like that... Maybe someday!:)
