A bunch of honeybees found my feeder last year. I called a local bee man over; he said they wouldn't bother the chickens (he has them himself) & would likely be gone the following day. They were.

We get swarms that pass thru here (really freaky) & they've stopped a few times to rest for a few hours to a few days. The longest we had a temporary hive here was 5 days. The kids were pretty little & I had chickens & an old, slow moving dog that liked to lay out there... We left them alone & they never bothered anybody, but I was a nervous wreck. Thought they'd never go away.

bee swarms are benign as long as you dont mess with them. they are busy hunting for a new home and their energy is spent on travel and the safety of their queen.

Here in Santee when I was about sixteen a bee swarm came in and formed a ball under a folding chair. We called in a bee keeper ... he waited till dusk for the ball to tighten up then he put a cardboard box under them then smoked them a little... Tightening up the ball.

Once the ball was to his liking he took a big stick and whacked the seat of the chair... Wham the whole ball fell in the box. He whoofd some more smoke in and waited for the stragglers then closed up the box and off he went to put them in one of his hives.

Pretty interesting process for sure... all the while he was talking about the bees and educatinge all us spectators.

I've had them swarm my hummingbird feeders before. I haven't been too afraid of them in the past. Our normal honey bees have never been a problem I don't bother them they are such important pollinators. I'm just scared the killer bees will make their way here some day.
