Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Yup.... very difficult to achieve unless you burn the pan... or cook it in the oven.

The heating elements wont have wire in them... the connection to the heatin elements to deliver the electricity will. Say on Brinsea

brinsea will have HEat Tape which is littlerally a printed circuit board on Mylar... They use those printed heat tapes for reptile enclosure heat. To deliver eighty degrees it takes very very little energy... producing nothing near 500 degrees.

I was on the MHP site for a very long time. LOve the principal... but will be building my own out of materials that I know are: Safe, Fire Resistant, and Waterproof.

The only problem I've had with heating pad brooders is that occasionally a chick will get itself lodged between the frame and the pad. It's pretty rare for that to happen. Otherwise, I've noticed hundreds of happy chicks with a heating pad.
I've done good with a heating pad too.
I've only got about a dozen hatches under my belt.
But ducks won't go under the pad on mine.... Chicks will.
Yeah ducks usually sit on top......

If I'm not mistaking and I'll look it up in a minute.... But I don't think tephlon gases out till 500 degrees......I will look it up....
That's what I have read too. So do y'all think that a heat lamp would get up to 500 degrees?
As far as the hair dryer thing that may well just be one of those stories that got around. . . May not be any truth to it. I seen a few online blogs where someone claimed they killed their parrot with a blow dryer letting off fumes. . but people also claim ducks dangles fall off too So o o :lau

Bulb surfaces get super hot... I've never measured it, but I'm thinking it definitely could.

I would still think with proper ventilation it wouldn't have built up enough to kill the flock. . .but could be that the birds were hanging out around it for the warmth. :hmm
You're probably right. I was thinking the same thing - about the ventilation.
I spoke to a lady down the street who just completely "unventilated" her coop trying to keep her birds warm. We have had - what - 1 day below freezing, and may only end up with about a handful all winter, and she's gotten rid of all their air flow! Anyway. She thinks I'm crazy. Well, mostly I am, but not about the air thing.

Oh dear. That's a bad idea. :th

I just went out and checked..... This is a 250 watt bulb that's been on for a few weeks.
It said it is 336 degrees...... So no a heat lamp doesn't get up to 500 degrees.....

My coop is open all day in temps around zero and my birds are fine....I feel for them but they are okay. I'm sure they can't wait for the temps to go back up. But my point is since not lost one bird yet in 4 years during the winter no matter how cold.
When the temps stay below ZERO I just keep them inside the coop that day. With PLENTY ventilation.
Even my Ayams are fine. But I feel without ventilation her birds will get sick....
