Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Mystery solved. A pair of house finches had a nest on the front porch. Three days ago 1 egg hatched. The parents seemed agitated, and next day the chick was gone and the nest was deserted. I blamed Scaredy Cat. Today I cleaned/removed the nest, and to my surprise found the shell of a hatched cowbird egg wrapped around a house finch egg. They knew the hatchling was an impostor and deserted the nest. If they nest again I'll be on the outlook for a 'parasitic' egg.
Interesting that they knew it wasn't theirs

I did so much bad stuff as a young adult....

So far my kids have been making really good choices... I am not sure what is wrong with them. Maybe they aren't mine. :old

My eldest presents so poorly.... I always worry about him being in the world.... :barnie Mostly because I remember the pain I endured for having the same problems (huh... so I guess he must be genetically mine  )

He is getting better.... I think I got better with age..... maybe....

Anyway.... he is getting this HUGE honor in a few weeks (first week of July), and I am in this whirlwind of proud of him and terrified that he will present poorly infront of all of these muckitymucks and ruin his reputation.

Which is just sad... because unlike me he is a VERY good kid!

Awww this is going to be a fun adventure for you! Be sure to show us some pics.

Hope it wasn't out too long! I'm surprised mine didn't go out with the horrible storm we had. Poor Roscoe is scared of the thunder and woke me up several times.

How many hatchers you got out now?? :pop
She's up to 2 now, near as I can tell; yellow (which will turn white) with a few black spots, & a black Marans look-alike, complete with white bib. If there are more yet, she's keeping them under wraps...or wings.

Apparently some birds can tell. Had a 'bird' person in at the beagle club yesterday (thinking of conducting a bird census there), and I told her about my Phoebes and the cowbirds parasitizing their nest both last year and this year. She told me that Phoebes will not feed a cowbird chick - they will desert the nest. Which happened to the first nest last year. Since cowbirds have a short incubation period they always hatch before the host eggs. They then push the host eggs or any hatchlings out of the nest. Lazy buggers ought to raise their own kids.

Sounds about like some of the people in this world..

can ya just eat them all?

Ha! My poor kid felt bad and apologized. I told him turning off the oven is something an oven should manage to live through.

He,was good though... spent over an hour cleaning the mudporch... So we don't all die of embarrassement when the repair guy comes.
I need to catch the culprits first! Even ate whole marigold plants i started from seed!:rant
