Well? Did anyone figure out why Silky Bantams have stinky poopies?

Honestly I do not think Silkie chickens’ poop smells any worse than other breeds. They all stink!🤣
Weirdly, although I agree with you, my Plymouth Rocks poop smells to me like unbaked bread dough that was left out an hour more than is good. But this is a definite smellavision sample to send if I could.:lau By the way? Does anyone know what or where these cute animated critters come from? Now that my kids are gone, I don't know about this cute emoji stuff. No kid-inputting anymore.

my hypothesis is the smell is due to their dark skin melanin pigmentation and the chromosomal 5 toed thing which twists the balance of the anal and/or the digestive glands that scent in their poopies to make that strong odor.
There is no correlation between an increase and melanin and fecal odor. Nor is there a correlation between polydactyly and the smell of their waste. Chicken poop stinks, poop usually does.

Welcome to BYC, by the way. You may find your practices to be a bit out-of-the-norm, so you might have trouble getting tips to decrease the smell, other than moving your birds outside.

True. They stay outside a lot, but I have a lot of wildlife here that is crafty. Including rodents and hawks. So it's a juggling dance, but worth it. The silkies are just too small and trusting for all night out here. I'm too fearful of what may happen. Foxes, raccoons, rats, hawks, dogs, and other critters. Too risky. So, in they come each day as the sun comes down. Thank you for your opinion. I wondered since I had a dark-brown pet rat that I had as a youngster with an interesting natural musk smell compared to the blonde fancy rat friend it had which had no musky smell. I wondered if it was a similar thing. I guess not. Hmmm. One never knows. I never really gave it much more thought until lately.

Well, yes, thank you for that heads up! I have them in the house mostly when the sun goes down, although they have a fun run outside. They get Purina Layena, proper grit with the digestive probiotics, and oyster shell, etc. The land here is clean, and I buy fresh earth in bags at the hardware store without any fertilizer stuff, just regular earth, then I actually bake it to get rid of any mites or whatever might be in the bag since I don't know where the earth came from/dirt. I really try. I love them a lot. I am sprouting some of their scratch outside and they love the shoots. They get a variety of healthy veggies, not a huge amount that causes the runs. I also bought feed from the tractor supply store and used the, what is it...Dumor brand? I can't stand the gas prices, because there is a feed store that has a different brand my other hens really liked, "Bar Ale"???? Does anyone have the best feed suggestions? I even sew them pillows to sleep on so their keel bones don't hurt, I REALLY spoil them...but PU! I pay so much money having wellness health checks on them...ug! But I am at the age where I think my heart would break if I wasn't this neurotic with them!!! I've had horses, goats, reptiles, wild birds of all sorts, and wild mammals, etc. But I had to tone it down a bit since I'm in my 50s now. yikes.
I would say PAY ATTENTION to your feed. I used layena for years. This spring I noticed my flock having off droppings and just not acting quite right. I checked the feed and it was moldy. Not as in it molded after I opened it, or got wet, but it was made with moldy ingredients at the factory. All 7 other bags were the same way. I took them back and traded them in for some from a different shipment. Every single one was made with moldy ingriedients. They told me that a lot of people were complaining, and that they think it may have something to do with supply chain and shipping issues, and the company just uses moldy grain so they don’t lose money. Either way, I posted online about it on a FB group and SO many other people were going through the same thing. I switched to beaver brand, and not only does my flock live the taste way more, their droppings are healthy again, and everyone is feeling better. Sorry for the novel, lol. I just don’t want anyone else’s babies to get sick.
