Well, I guess I need to ask here..anyone going to set soon, or has?

I'm coming up on a hatch day next tuesday with coturnix eggs ^_^
I imagine they raise them for meat and eggs. Grow quickly and what not. BUT I am not an expert. Plus they are very cuddly! And I have my own share of buttons here LOL. They are awesome but I am loving my coturnix!

So, I'm guessing they start laying sooner than chickens. And, I have another question. Someone told me that buttons only take one mate for life. Is that true??

So, if true..would need a quite a few in a pen? So they can find their forever lover? I don't know!

Coturnix can start laying as early as 4 weeks old.

As for buttons, they take one mate but if they lose their mate they will take another.

Cynthia go to www.stellargamebirds.com thats quailladyoffoyrtmyers site. Shes has just about any and everything you could want to know about buttons and coturnix.. others on here have sites with bobs and what not.. alot of what i now know about quail is from what i'v read on BREEDERS websites more than anything.... still keep the questions going by all means... just a bit of advice rather than waiting for answers. people on here are more or less the best source because the information is coming from those who raise birds all over the world. experience with anything is what makes experts. and we have experts on these forums

I'm new to raising quail. Really, new to raising birds in cages. I have most of my experience with helping birds in the wild. It started about 25 years ago I fell in love with wood ducks. I was told if you take something from nature you should return something to nature. So, I started with 4 wood duck boxes. I put them out & started monitoring the ducks laying in the houses. I loved it so I kept at it. I added more boxes. I even got boxes from the boy scouts. I was up to around 19 houses. I just loved watching these birds fly through the trees at a 100 miles an hour it amazed me. Their colors are brilliant. Well, I kept at it for 20 years. I had wood ducks like you wouldn't believe. I finally started banding the birds & then the bulldozers showed up & ended it. So, now I'm into raising chickens & quail. I love birds but raising them in cages is not the same. Sorry, my mind started drifting . The coturnix is my favorite I am on my second hatch. I hatched around 50 the first time & sold some & ate some very tasty bird.I hatched 60 more & have expanded to two pens. Their neat little birds.
