I am not sure the reasoning behind fasting and I am really not sure it has health benifits I am fit and I eat at least two meals a day. And not drinking water for 14 days sound frankly incredibly dangerouse can someone explain the reason behind fasting?

I don't know what the health reasons are behind fasting, but I fast a couple times a year for religious reasons. Our fasts are for 25 hours, the fasts of Ramadon are from sunrise to sunset for a certain number of days.

There are different types of fasts. Christians often will fast when they commit to a time of prayer. It is a sacrifice that helps them to refocus on their commitment to God or to pray hard about a troubling issue. Some fast food and water; others choose to drink and not eat. For health reasons, I drink juice if I choose to fast (the low blood sugar would defeat the purpose of trying to concentrate). I don't know what the rules are for fasting in Islam.

Eastern Orthodox Christians (like myself) fast 51% of the year. This means no animal products, no alcohol, no oil, and usually the quantity of food eaten is significantly reduced (this is the Russian tradition anyway; Greeks and mid-Easterners may vary). It really does wonders for your prayer life.

Unfortunately, my new chickens are predicted to begin laying right in the first week of the 40-day Nativity fast. Their entire first month of eggs will have to go to non-Orthodox family and friends...

Oh well. Those egg-laden treats at Christmas will taste fantastic!

Glory to God for all things.

Most other religions that practice fasting allow some water. It's no good killing off your followers, you know..
