I heard from the state vet today. Not only did my hen that they took test pos for pullorem (sp) she also was off the scale for MG and MS. So now I do not know what to do. The vet said that if I kept a closed flock, do not breed or bring in new birds that they could live just fine. So do I do that or try to get them all a blood test for the MG and MS and put down anyone who test pos??? All the cultures came back neg but he said that they could have just not be shedding at that time.

I am just sick. These birds are more than "chickens" to me they are my pets and buddies.

Personally I would have the flock tested and put those down that tested pos. Here in Ok. all three diseases are reportable diseases and birds that test pos. are culled.

Plus you could spread the diseases without knowing it and cause other flocks to be culled.

This is way harder than I ever thought having chickens would be. I do not have a roo so there would be no babies. The vet said that their eggs would be fine for eating. I just could not bring any new ones and no live birds could leave. I could load them all up, have them tested and only keep the neg ones. Only one problem. The vet said that they need 1cc of blood from all chickens. He said that the banties could suffer from losing blood.

How many chickens do you have? I sure understand how hard it is to make this kind of decision. I hope I'm never faced with it. Sorry that you are having to go through this.

Pullorum is a cullable disease. They will probably make it mandatory to test the whole flock for it. It can spread bird to bird and all birds with it need to be culled.

They will also probably continue to test your flock to make sure that it did not spread.

Since they will be testing, I would have them test the whole flock for MS and MG.

You need to make sure and turn in whoever sold you the bird as they are spreading pullorum.

And, 1cc of blood from a bantam is not that much, they will be ok. Just make sure to apply pressure to the blood draw site.

They are to come out again in about 3 weeks for another pullorum test. I only had one out of 26 that had it. They took her and did more test on her. I had some birds with swollen faces and running eyes. Then some that did not have that had runny noses for a couple of days. Now everyone is great, eating great and wonderful attidudes.

That happened to us this past Jan. We bought 5 BS Peafowl and they contaminated our whole flock of 100+ chicken and 10+Call Ducks pair of Mandarins, and our Ornamental Pheasants. My husband chose to cull them. It was better to start out with other birds and be able to get new ones and not worry about them being sick and dying rather than keeping the sick ones. It was hard and there were a few who def were special to me, but some of the new ones show some of the same qualities that I liked in the old ones and are just as friendly if not more so. I know it is a hard decision but you do what you feel is right. It was def hard I will admit I cried I loved my little call ducks it took me so long to find them... but I knew that I could not get another bird until everyone was gone.

if it is pullorum please cull that is what is best. it can spread, I thought that the government swoopes in and does a massive culling if pullorum is found, I am surprised that they did not since they are in existence to keep that and avian influensia at bay. they care very little about the MG and MS as it is worse for back yard flocks and not as dangerous for the commercial chicken industry.

With MG and MS you can close your flock and just cull the ones showing symptoms and re-test every few months until you have culled all the birds that have it.

or have each bird tested and only cull the possitive ones and then re-test a few months later and see if any others are possitive.
