Well, Now I Feel Like a Monster!

I don't happen to agree that vegetarianism is a bad thing. There are millions of healthy vegetarians in the world who aren;t dying of anemia.

vegetarians dont live longer,,, they just look like it

I respect anyone's choice of what to eat and I like some of the creative alternatives vegetarians have created (I'm a tofu nut, and just recently bought vital wheat gluten flour to try making my own seitan )

That being said, if I could live forever by not eating bacon - I'd be dead tomorrow

This kid thing is a tough one. My 17 year-old son thought it was going to be really cool to fix the chicken. He was much more mellow after the food was on his plate. He said to me," I had no idea that all that stuff went into fixing my chicken." He said it didn't really bother him, he just wasn't real comfortable killing the bird. After the deed was done, he was better with the plucking, gutting, cutting, etc. He was pretty quiet for a while that day, but he still loves chicken. He said that knowing something dies so you can eat it is not like KNOWING and participating in the process. I told him that I too hate the killing part, but if you want chicken you have to fix chicken. I think some children handle it better than others. The actual reality is just not one of those things we like to think about. Our ancestors just did it because it was a way of life to them and they were hungry and fixing themselves something to eat, plain and simple. :|

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and opinions.

We had a long talk tonight with the kids and explained, once again, why [philosophically] we are raising our own meat.

All the other kids were fine with it [a couple are even excited now to try "our own" meat]. My 5yo still doesn't like the idea, but she did say that if I would wait until tomorrow she would be OK with it - give him one more day and she wouldn't cry tomorrow. We'll see if she manages that, but she's usually pretty good about doing what she says...

Thanks again you guys.

Kelly
