After several weeks of being mixed together with my older chickens, the youngsters (23 weeks and 18 weeks) were moved into the big coop. I had a smaller one they were staying in since chicks, and I finally decided to paint both coops Saturday. My husband said you might as well mix them together before it gets cold weather. So I closed off the little one and of course they paced out front of it trying to figure out what to do. Every night they would walk up the plank to the big coop to get food but then they would come back out and go into their little one to sleep. When 2 of them went in we shut the door before they could come out and then put the other 2 in and shut the door for the night. My 2 little EE flew up on the roost immediately with the adults! The 23 week olds were in the corner. So Sunday night and last night I go out there to see if they are going to need help finding where to go and they were all inside by themselves!! No need to even shut the door. Of course I shut the door to the run so they would be safe, but we don't shut the little small door so they can come outside in the mornings to the run. I'm just so happy they did so well! Now if they would only lay some eggs............................

Congrats! We just had a happy integration of two 6 month old Barred Rock babies in with our 6 two-year old hens. They were kept in separate runs separated by wire during the day, and separate coops with separate ramps and doors at night. Recently we opened the door between the runs and they are getting along just fine. Just a little chest bumping here and there, but no attacks or anything. The babies had been going up into their own coop at night until last night when I found one of the babies in with the big girls, while the other baby went to bed in her own coop. Wonder if I will have all 8 girls roosting together and nobody in the other coop!

I don't think mine would have went in there at night on their own. I had to put them in there and shut the door the first night, but the next night they went on their own and last night I looked in and ALL 4 little ones were on the roost with the big ones! Before last night 2 of them would stay in the corner. Funny how the little things are so exciting to us chicken people! lol! Are your barred rocks laying yet?
