The weirdest thing just happened. I went to pick up Jellybean, one of my EEs because sometimes I just wanna hold my chickens for a bit, you know? Well She squatted for me as I approached, and I started to pet her. Suddenly though she started waddling away in the penguin stance. I leaned down to see what was up and I could see her try to push something out of her vent- it was an egg. It plopped onto the ground. She stood there for a moment stunned as if her life had just flashed before her eyes, but then went on her merry way and ran to catch up with the other chickens who had gone ahead and made their way up the hill. I picked up the egg and realized that it was shell-less. I looked at it and decided that since she is acting completely healthy, and very happy, that she probably isn’t sick. I also know for an absolute fact that her calcium levels are just right Because Her eggs are always really strong and beautiful. So with this in mind I think there are two possible reasons for this: A) Because she’s such a reliable layer who rarely misses a day of laying, this could just be a one time whoops from her high-production body. B) The Chickens could be stressed out by the new nightly visits of Mr Loner Barncat (Who oddly enough looks almost exactly like a Raccoon) He is technically a predator in their eyes, and stress is a really common cause in egg issues Like this.

Im watching her and the nest boxes to make sure this doesn’t happen again, but I’m very glad I was there when it happened, otherwise I either wouldn’t know who to blame, or the other chickens would have devoured it already.

One of mine had a shell lrss egg when just getting started. Like you, I got it away before some hen decided to peck or eat it. No repeats in 6 months.
It’s relatively common in new layers. This one has been laying for 4 months so I feel like we’re passed that window of strange eggs due to the new cycle.

Here’s the lovely lady who dropped me the fluke egg.
