We had the same problem at our old house in VA. I changed the filter in the house once a month. If i didn't, the toilet water was the first indicator when it turned orange.
We now live less than 15 min from that house znd the water is crystal clear with no filter.
If you guys have basic plumbing skills (if not, i hear ya. I hate plumbing but do it to save money) you can install a basic warm season filtration system for your spigot. It will essentially be the same as a cartridge filter for your home just outside. Most parts if not all should be in stock at your local home depot. Should cost less than $100.
