WOW I'm surprised. The rescues usually work at weight gain before adopting them out.

He's gonna be beautiful though after some home cooking!

What dog food did you get?

Fix him a little rice and add some canned fish and cottage cheese. Works good for adding weight and makes their coats shiny.

He's lucky he got such a good home and so quickly.

Enjoy him. Our new GSD pup is 9 weeks now. I feed all my dogs Innova, but have to drive all the way to the Bay Area to get it.

Has he been wormed? I've seen a lot of bad cases of hookworms and whipworms in shelter dogs when I was doing volunteer work. I forget which one, but one of the two is not taken care of by the basic wormers shelters normally give, and our shelter dog had a huge case of it when we brought her home despite being wormed at the shelter. All the supplements and food in the world won't get him looking his best if he's got nasty beasties.

How beautiful!! Congrats!!! How is he with the chickens?

Redhen, I can't speak for nationwide, but the Petsmart's and Petco's around here have a section in the front for rescue groups to bring in the animals for rehoming. Some are turned into the rescue groups from the owners (job loss, moving, etc....whatever their reason may be). Others, like my dog, Kenzie, that I adopted from a Petco or Petsmart, was in a high kill shelter and was scheduled to be put down, so they came in a adopted her from he shelter, then turned around and adopted her out at the local pet store. It is a really a neat idea and I thankful that Petco and Petsmart have opened their doors to rescue groups to rehome the animals (of course, they make the money from people buying the supplies for their new addition).
