I'm brand new to chicks and I would love to know what the guess would be on our Wellsummer chick. Pullet or Roo? S/he's way bigger than our other chicks and we were told they were all the same age. Thoughts?

Looks like a rooster. I have a welsummer pullet a little older than yours, and her comb is alot smaller. She also doesn't have that red coming in on her feathers. Good luck!

It appears to have salmon on the chest as opposed to black for roosters, but it is hard to see. Where doesn't it have "red" coming in. Just curious, as I have 16 of these little guys. I have had many straight combed pullets with combs like that depending on age, but they stay yellow instead of turning pink at an early age.

Are you kidding me?!

comparing with the other chicks in the picture, that is NOT definately the same age as the other chicks. I think it is like a month or a month and half OLDER than the hicks in the picture.

The feather pattern is barred, not of partridge pattern. And it looks cockeral because of the red feather pattern in the back and wing coverlets....a true indication. Either a hatchery or bad Welsummer or a Brown Leghorn or probably by a long shot, a Campine?????? The neck feathers should be of gold, not salmon or brown with black thin penciling.

Did you buy these chicks from a hatchery?

Whatever this chick is, enjoy him!

Thanks for your input. I can't have a rooster so I am trying to figure out the gender as soon as I can. I was told it was a Wellsummer but the seller could have been wrong. I am not too worried aboutit being pure bred at all.

The red is coming in on his/her chest and the triangle on the head is clearly lined. I was reading that the eyeliner was a dead give away that it was a female. But then again, this little one has huge legs and feet.

Guess I should have explained a little better ;) I went out and took some pics this morning so you could see what I'm talking about. The red I speak of is what's coming out around the neck and the streaks in its wings and such. My pullets breast feathers are the same brown as the rest of her partridgy feathers.

And her comb is quite small compared to yours, I believe she's about 4-5 weeks old.

Isn't there an old Wives-Tale about Welsummer Pullets & Cockerals???

Something about...if there's a slash or a dash behind the eye its a Pullet and if there's a dot its a Cockerel...or visa versa...??

I thought you could sex them by the V shape mark on their heads? I sexed that way and got 100% on the sexes but I don't remember how to do it.
