The baby chickens are coming along nicely…

We went thru a few pasty butts at the beginning of the weekend and have been weighing and wiping their (now clean) chicken butts with baby oil on a cotton ball.

No more pasty butt, nice clean bedding and a some help for the littlest ones. I started smashing a boiled egg on plates for them.

They’ve gained 91 grams collectively. The seven of them together are 539 grams as of yesterday.

They LOVE those eggs! I also tried some finely minced spinach and I’m trying to decide if I should continue that. But soon, I’ll have to give them two boiled eggs because it just disappears!

Hope you’re all having a good week and don’t slow down! They might be gaining on you. 🤣

Do you have Starter feed crumbles?? to feed them besides the eggs??
If you have,,,, GREAT
If not,,,,, can I suggest you get a small bag of Medicated Feed Crumbles. This gets them thru the coccidiosis Period Potential.
I understand you gave them some finely chopped Spinach. I personally would hold off on such,, until they are slightly bigger,, and can have Chick Grit. JMO.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome

Hi! Thanks for reaching out.

I do have Mannapro Chick Starter Crumbles and Milling Star Chick Starter Mash - which I’ve been feeding them all along. The smashed up egg is just a treat I give them after they're weighed and their butts have been checked for pasty. I started the egg routine because two of them were just not thriving at first.

They’re all doing very well now though! As a group, they’ve gained about 100 grams and I think I’m happy with that. 😊

I also use Chick Boost probiotic with vitamins in their water. Do you think that’s enough?

I sprinkle a bit of Chick Grit in their food and some on the floor of their enclosure for them to peck at. Hopefully, they’re getting enough?

As for the spinach, they are not very enthused about it right now so I’ve cut it out.

I’m getting a little anxious about how many cockerels I might have since they’re illegal in my city - but I guess I’ll cross that bridge a bit later obviously.

I hope I can find them good homes! It hurts my heart a little bit to hand them off, but I’ll get through it.

On another happy note, one of my older girls has laid an egg two days in a row - after not laying any since last summer. Weird. When I first got her (and her sister), I had a pair of parakeets and I’ll be darned if those little birds didn’t lay their own eggs right after I rescued the hens! Life’s funny that way.

Thanks so much for your note!
It’s so encouraging to know there are so many caring and knowledgeable folks here!

Take care and maybe ttyl!

Roosters are also not allowed in my area. That is one reason I usually get somewhat mature pullets, that are definitely hens.
I know how heartbreaking it is to part with chicks
that you cant keep.:hit:hugs

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting chicks. I was keeping my eye on the shelters because that’s what I’ve done in the past.
I thought my husband was out of his MIND when he said we were getting them in the MAIL!
“Only three”
“It’s a 4H thing”
OMGosh.
Migraines and tears on the way 💦
